The Sonata will be performed by Mariko Kaneda (piano) and guest musician Keith Robinson (cello). The four-movement work from the Russian Romantic era, which was Rachmaninoff’s final chamber music composition, is known for giving both the piano and the cello substantial roles to play. Many themes in this piece are introduced by the piano, as Rachmaninoff believed it was equally vital to the cello and not intended as an accompaniment to it.
The program also includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s Seven Variations on “Bei Männern, welche Liebe Fühlen” WoO 46 (1801) for cello and piano, which were written on themes from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. Sunday at Central has recently highlighted several works by Beethoven in honor of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
