Why do we find it so hard to accept help? In one of our earliest meetings, we explored the idea of reciprocity, a founding principle of Village in the Ville. During that first meeting, and in many subsequent meetings, Village members expressed feeling reluctant to ask for or accept help. Why is this? Could it be that so much of our understanding of helping others is informed by the charity framework, a framework that lawyer and activist Dean Spade describes as stigmatizing and miserable? If so, are there other ways we can understand helping others, ways that promote mutual support and solidarity rather than charity?

Join us on May 18th from 11 am to 12 pm to explore these questions with other Villagers! We will be meeting at Dede Prince's home, who has, again, graciously offered to host our conversation. Once you sign up, you'll receive her address in a confirmation email. You can also look her up on our member directory on Helpful Village. If you don't receive an email confirmation or can't find her address on Helpful Village, please reach out to William at (614) 390-4827, and he'll provide you with Dede's address. You can also contact him with any other questions you may have!
